About European Cultural Backbone This European Cultural Backbone meeting of European cultural facilities involved in New Media Culture in Europe was initialised by the Austrian Federal Chancellery, Department for the Arts and organised by Public Netbase t0 & Institute for New Culture Technologies. The meeting was held with the support of the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the British Arts Council and KulturKontakt and under the patronage of the UNESCO.
	The objective of the ECB meeting was to develop a joint approach between the European Media Culture Institutions with regard to issues of cultural participation in electronic networks and the preservation of the public domain in the Information Society.
	The ECB meeting was designed to offer the participants a forum to discuss the future of the network of artists and creative professionals such as it exists today on an informal level. And it aimed at developing a joint organisational structures in the field of new electronic media.
	One of the most visible and urgent projects of such a co-operative effort will be activities to construct and use a joint infrastructure (European Cultural Backbone ECB) aimed at safeguarding the range and inclusion of artists and creative professionals and the formation of a successful pressure group.
